Za’atar Restaurant + Bar

Za’atar is a restaurant concept that feels personal to me. As someone who is Persian, I wanted to design a space that reflects the warmth and hospitality I grew up around. Za’atar is a traditional Middle Eastern spice blend made with thyme, sesame seeds, sumac, and salt. It is simple but full of depth, and it represents culture, tradition, and shared meals. I chose the name because I wanted the space to carry that same meaning. It is about bringing people together and creating an experience that feels rich, welcoming, and memorable.

The restaurant is divided into two distinct atmospheres. Downstairs is light, airy, and open. I used beige, cream, and soft white tones along with marble and light wood to create a calm and inviting environment. Large windows and interior greenery bring in a natural element and make the space feel alive. The plants are placed throughout the dining areas to connect the interior with Mediterranean landscapes. Upstairs shifts into a darker and more intimate setting. Black marble, deep tones, and gold accents create contrast and elevate the experience into something more refined and dramatic. The transition between floors is meant to feel like moving from day into night, while still keeping the same theme of connection and love throughout the entire space. Za’atar was all about duality.
